What one nutty weekend can do. . .

Ya know, when you've had such a LONG, COLD, RAINY spring and finally get some semblance of actual summer weather and decide to head to the coast for the weekend with friends--well things can get a little CRAZY!

This past weekend, dear hubby and I decided to give the coast another shot--and this time we went with some friends (as well as dear daughter & her family) just to see if the change of scenery (and the change of faces) would be an improvement.

As you can tell from the photos---the weather was so HOT--we had to wear shades!

It really was quite nice to bask in the sun and burn ourselves to a crisp.

I actually managed to get into the ocean water with my lil' grandsons. 'But wait!' I can hear you say. 'Isn't the ocean along the Oregon coast EXTREMELY cold?'

My answer: YES it is! But once the hypothermia sets in--you don't feel a thing!

The boardwalk at Seaside was full of fun and activities and Sam & Max enjoyed the Carousel ride.

Meanwhile, one of our friends was extremely baffled at what in tarnation that 'big yellow ball-thing' was up in the sky. . . (it had been usually covered up most of the time by clouds and a thing referred to as 'overcast')

Rest assured, that he finally figured out it was indeed THE SUN--and we all enjoyed it immensely this past weekend.

Thanks to our wonderful friends who hosted us and put up with all our 'antics'!

WE WUV YOU GUYS!

The new 'politically correct' grading system

Well, well, well! What will they think of next???

My youngest son had to go to his high school to get his 'official transcript' since they somehow forgot to mail his final grades out after the school term ended this past June.

And the 'new, improved' grading system I found on that parchment was a WONDER TO BEHOLD!

You can actually receive grades like:

BM ( a B grade Modified--which means your B grade actually could have taken a 'dump' to a C--but we left it alone for now)

Or. . .

DH (a D grade with Honors! Fer cryin' out loud! Now you can get a below passing grade WITH HONORS! Which means technically you were too stupid for us to bump up to a C- or something, so we're gonna put an EXTRA BIG SMILEY FACE by your D to make you feel better)

Or. . .

FH (an F grade with Honors--which means you failed, but you did it with style--and that's really hard to do, so kudos to YOU!)

Or. . .

PM (which is Passing Modified--which means. . . who the heck knows? We're gonna pass you--but we are gonna have to have a hall monitor tail you around for a few days to make sure that you can find your locker)

Or. . .

AM (a A that has been Modified--which basically means, this SHOULD have been a B--but we know you are a totally anal student who will end up getting your parents to protest and sue the entire school board, so we're gonna give you that A--but realize it's a tenuous line you are walking here--so stress yourself out, and SHAPE UP!)

Or. . .

WBF (Withdrawn But Fine--We reserve the right to withdraw the original grade we gave you--but not to worry, you are just fine--you may end up with a BM in PM after you retake your classes in the AM)

Or a slew of other acronyms that it would take me far too long to explain. . .
But rest assured, I am so happy that FINALLY 'no child will be left behind'!! Yep! No child's feelings will ever be hurt again--those pesky A, B, C, D, and F grades are a thing of the past. . .

Kids cannot be just an 'A' student anymore. They can be AM--(Average Modified) or AH (Average with Honors) or ASS (Average Super Student)

I must say, some of these new grades had me baffled--but then I thought, heck! Why not have some FUN with these acronyms and really tell it like it is?

Why give the standard 'I' for an 'incomplete' grade? (You know, the class you completely skipped or screwed up in) Why not throw in an appropriate acronym and tell the whole story? Such as:

IRA (Incomplete but Really Attempted)

Or better yet--ICON (Incomplete, Capable Of Nothing)

Or the creme de la creme--IDIOTS (Incompetent Dolt whose Ignorance Is Off The Scorecard)

Hey! Now that's something I could really get behind. . .

Don't say you weren't warned about the new grading system.

And don't be fooled when little Johnny and Susie come home and tell you that they are an 'A' student. You need to delve a little deeper and find out if they are an AH, an AM, an AD, or ADHD. . . or something else entirely. . .

Happy July 4th!

Yes indeedy! July 4th 2008 turned out to be a RIP 'ROARIN' time for our little PYROFREAK family. . . .

Starting off with a little number manufactured especially by 'J-Man' just before we took off for a weekend at the Oregon coast. . .

We spent the weekend on the Oregon Coast at Nehalem Bay, Hug Point and Manzanita Beach.

This is 'G-Pa' pretending he is KING OF THE WORLD!

Next we have Sam, Max and J-Man. . . then G-Pa & Sam appreciating all the 'coastal creatures'

Then we have dear daughter with Max and me with Sam. . . and EGADS! Was I making a fashion statement or WHAT? (actually it WAS a bit rainy at the parade--but I think I went a bit OVERBOARD!)

We had such a fun time with our daughter and her hubby and the boys. The beach, the parade, the food, the games, the fireworks show. . .the potato cannon fiasco! Thanks for inviting us for such a DOGGONE GOOD TIME!

What a GREAT 4th Of July!

Max turned TWO!

OK, OK, I am not going up for 'Nana of the year award' anytime soon. . .

But needless to say--my beloved second grandson, Max had his second birthday this past June and what with the MAYHEM and CHAOS and downright TOMFOOLERY going on--I didn't write a single thing about it!

MY BAD!

Sooo. . . I am posting some pictures to make up for it. . . and suffice it to say--the little guy had a VERY happy birthday--trotting all around the U.S. to California, Idaho, Hawaii, the Oregon coast, and even Nana's house to spend the night.

Oh! And 'G-Pa' even climbed a tree in his honor! (Don't ask, I have NO earthly idea why. . .)

Sam decides to get a little 'tree action' himself!

to MAX!

The Loss Of A Faithful Friend. . .

This is one of those times in your life in which you have an 'aha moment' (as coined by a dear friend of mine)

It is difficult to find the words to convey exactly what I am feeling--but those of you who have gone through a similar experience I'm sure will understand. . .

This past Wednesday we put our beloved pet dog of nearly 14 years down. It was time. . . it's like knowing the inevitable is going to happen--but wishing and hoping somehow for a different outcome.

We rescued this adorable 'mutt' from the Humane Society shortly after our move here to the northwest. The kiddies had been BEGGING for a dog ever since we arrived in our new domicile--after almost a year of putting them off. . . I caved!

Call me weak-spirited--call me whatever you want, but the fact of the matter is--I packed all 4 of them into the family mini-van and off we went to see if we could find a dog to care for that had been abandoned or rescued. . .

After looking around and seeing the sad faces and yappy personalities of most of occupants of the cages I became discouraged. Even though the kids would have taken ANY of them in--I just wasn't impressed and couldn't see myself bringing any of them into our household.

That's when one of the workers pulled a stunt that I thought was only reserved for used car salesmen. He said they 'just got in' another dog in the back--but hadn't brought him out for the general populace to see yet. But he thought that it just might be the dog my family was looking for.

I was very skeptical--but waited with my howling kids who were looking at a morbidly obese dalmatian/dachshund mix who couldn't move from his sitting position and INSISTING we get this dog RIGHT NOW! (I didn't think he would fit in the car, nor was I sure that even all 5 of us could lift him)

Then. . . it happened. That 'moment' when you know your life is about to change forever. The worker brought out this amazing little lab/terrier mix dog. He was only about 30 pounds, fully grown (as he was 2 years old already) black, with a white patch on his underbelly, and the look that he gave me from those sweet chocolate brown eyes completely melted my heart.

Not to mention the fact that he looked EXACTLY down to his size and fur like the dog my dear hubby had grown up with. I mean this dog was like his former dog reincarnated or something. . . The kids and I did an audible gasp. . . and then we went into the 'cubicle' with the dog to check him out and see how he would be with the kids. It was ALL OVER at that point. They LOVED him (right down to the baby) and after being told he was completely housebroken, did NOT dig, would not run away, didn't shed much, could do simple math calculations in his head--(and all the other qualifications I had on my list of 'the perfect dog') we bundled him up and took him home. . .

The name on the paper from his former owners said 'Mickey', and after much arguing and debate among the children--we decided to keep his original name, since he responded to it quite well.

I was a bit anxious to see how dear hubby would react when he got home that evening and discovered our newest family member. Dear hubby took one look at our new pet and it was over for him too. . They bonded like a wet tongue to a metal pole on a freezing day!

And so began nearly 14 years of life with this dog who filled our home and hearts with laughter and love. He became my hubby and sons best hiking buddy. He also liked to camp and fish, take long walks by the beach, attend sports games and 'sing' when dear hubby played the harmonica or oldest son played the trumpet. (and truth be told, the dog's 'singing' sounded much better many times!)

I found out that he truly WAS housebroken, did not dig, and wouldn't run away--but the worker DID exaggerate a bit about the shedding (he did it a lot) and he wasn't too keen on math--but he had a pretty good handle on TIME and when he should eat and be let out to do his business. . .

Friends would comment on how amazing he was--because I can be 'picky' about some things--and we trained this dog to stay OFF the furniture and beds (except for one room where he was allowed to sleep with the kids) He wasn't allowed to go into the formal living and dining room and always kept out (even when we had guests and all of us were in there but him!) And he would wait by the front or back door when let back inside to have his paws wiped off if it was rainy or muddy.

He literally was the PERFECT dog. . . and yes he did some exasperating things at times--but over all he was an excellent fit for our family. . .

But he started getting older, and grayer, and hard of hearing, and then starting having more serious problems that dogs (as well as people) have when they age--and he wasn't eating and other things were going on in his body. . .

So the conundrum is--do you keep him alive and hope he doesn't suffer--or do you allow him to go peacefully without pain, before things start getting worse?

Dear Hubby and I were having these kinds of questions and conversations for the past several weeks. . .

Meanwhile the dog would rally--then get worse--rally right back, then get sick again--and so the cycle went. . .

Finally I made the decision to go ahead and take him to the vet for that 'final time'. I called dear hubby at work--and my youngest son and I went for a late afternoon appointment. . . and I was very impressed that the workers were so sensitive and kind and treated us and our dog with dignity and respect.

This youngest son of mine was just a baby of 3 1/2 when we got this dog--and now he was a big, strapping 17 year old young man who helped me take the dog in and stayed with him right to the very end. It was EXTREMELY bittersweet. There was no pain, we were holding and talking to him right up to the end. . . and then the vet left us to have a last moment and say our final goodbyes to our pet.

I never thought I would react as strongly as I did. I had been complaining about the recent 'accidental messes' this dog had been making since he had gotten older and sicker for quite sometime--but when it came right down to actually going through with it, and having him put to sleep--it was quite another matter entirely.

It's been 3 days and I still find myself waiting for him to greet me at the door (he was the BEST at welcoming anyone into our home) or thinking it's time to feed him and check his water dish, or stopping myself from calling out to him (especially when I've spilled food on the floor--as he was the quickest and best clean-up unit we had going)

Yeah, I know all about the 'circle of life' and all that. . . but it still SUCKS sometimes, ya know? One little 30 pound MUTT made such a huge impact and created such a GIANT space in my heart--and now it's GONE. . .

So even though, I'm having a hard time seeing for the tears to write this all down--I just HAD to remember him and tell about him and even though he is no longer here--I have pictures in my mind and feelings in my heart that will live forever. . . and now a few inadequate words on a blog to remember him by too. . .

Farewell beloved, Mickey. . . .

Bridge Over Troubled Water. . .

What IS it with our family and WATER????

I mean---COME ON!

For the past 3 years (in this VERY month, no less) we have had to put up with some 'unseemly' water problems. . .

In June of 06'--it was SEWAGE WATER and the crapola that accumulated under our house--and what a COMPLETE DISASTER that was!

To read about that debacle--just CLICK HERE

Then in June of 07' our water heater broke and flooded the garage. . . (thankfully it lived out in the garage, so it's death only caused minor discomfort and mayhem--and a big pain to the pocket book. BUT just 48 hours later a water pipe broke in the garage and got all the stuff that the water heater damage didn't manage to soak!

(I think the water heater and garage pipes tag-teamed up to do us in that summer or something) Our plumber was EXTREMELY happy to empty our wallets out within 2 days time--and since he was 'johnny-on-the-spot' back in '06, and ELATED over the '07 disaster--he left us with a twinkle in his eye and a promise to see us the same time NEXT year. . .

Yeah right!

BUT THEN---right on schedule--in June of '08 (Just this past weekend, for Father's Day, mind you) we had a pipe start leaking profusely right under our sink--and the kitchen that we have so lovingly been remodeling and POURING countless dollars into anyway--took ANOTHER hit! (a big, sloppy WET hit)

Dear Hubby who has the patience of a gnat on a good day--just about LOST IT BIG TIME! However, he managed to save what little spending money we have left and ended up fixing the sink pipes all by himself. (I was QUITE proud actually) But we are keeping a massive bucket underneath the sink. . .you know. . . just in case.

I am thinking of giving up all water sports and boycotting rain just on principle now. (which will be QUITE a major feat since we live in the great Northwest where rain is more than a mere pastime)

I just CANNOT fathom what kind of water disaster will befall us in June of '09--but I am thinking we've had just about every kind of water disaster already---so the water gods are going to have to get a bit creative.

(and yes--when we first moved into the place we already went through the preliminary leaking roof problems, and leaking shower stalls and blocked up, overflowing toilets--so DON'T EVEN GO THERE)

A friend came up to me this week and asked me if I wanted to join a water aerobics class with her for the summer. . . I think she was a little shocked by my response when I slapped her face quite smartly and took off in a huff the other direction. . .

I've been TAGGED!

Oh JOY! It finally happened to ME! I've been seeing these 'tagging' posts where it says stuff like: You've been TAGGED! . . . TAG me! . . . I'm TAGGING a friend today . . . I need to TAG someone . . I've reached my TAGGING limit . . . TAG, you're it! (and other such epithets) But I never knew what it all meant. . . UNTIL TODAY!

My blogging buddy, CDR, has tagged me! Here goes...

The rules: Each player answers the questions about themselves. At the end of the post, the player then tags 5 people and posts their names, then goes to their blogs and leaves them a comment, letting them know they’ve been tagged and asking them to read your blog. Let the person who tagged you know when you’ve posted your answer.

What was I doing ten years ago? Being a complete maniac, teaching about 10-14 fitness classes per week, coordinating fitness programs for 2 health clubs, taking a Kung Fu class with my oldest son, speaking to kids in middle and high school about drugs, teen pregnancy, STDs, and developing core strength, raising 4 kids, and trying to keep up with my 'outdoorsy' husband!

What are five (non-work) things on my to-do list for today? Workout, read a bit from the vampire books my daughter got me hooked on, get registration and licenses for the new cars we bought, check out places to see what kind of counter tops and sink I want for my 'FOREVER in the remodeling process kitchen', and of COURSE answer this 'tag request' on my blog!

5 Snacks I enjoy: Oh Heavens! This feels like a confession. . . oh well. . . chocolate macadamia nuts, fresh homemade bread or rolls with lots of butter, hot artichokes with melted butter dip, Baskin Robbins peanut butter & chocolate ice cream, fruit (especially blackberries, blueberries, pineapple, watermelon and those little Clementine tangerines)

Things I would do if I were a billionaire: I'd do the responsible thing first (which is pay off any debts and buy off my friends and family) Once that is out of the way--I'd get a gorgeous home on the coast for me--a home in the mountains near a lake for my dear hubby, a beautiful castle in Scotland or Ireland, and a villa in Italy, and a small Caribbean Island, donate profusely to charity, travel the world and do a BUNCH of dumb, exciting and ridiculous things. . . then when I was through with this planet--I'd start exploring other planets and galaxies. . .

Places I have lived: Ohio, Arizona, California, Utah, Louisiana, Texas, and Oregon

Jobs I have had: Babysitter extrodinaire, Cashier at a drugstore, Ice Cream Parlor Manager, Janitor on college campus, Waitress, Bank teller, Children's Dance/Fiitness Director, Public Speaker, Fitness Coordinator/Director, Aerobics Instructor, Aerobics Business Owner, Health/Fitness Teacher, Internet Sales Business, Wonderful wife, Manic Mother, Notorious Nana, Freelance Blogger (although I am waiting for the last one to take off and actually produce some income!)

The 5 bloggers I am tagging? April, Megan, Jennie, Amy, Melanie

OK--now that you've been tagged, my friends, I EXPECT to hear back from you. So--you know what to do. . . oh! And no complaining! Just follow this slogan I have posted for you here:
